Why Storytelling Matters in Early Childhood

Every August, our rooms fill with costumes, cushions and favourite stories read for what feels like the hundredth time. It’s a small season on the calendar, but it reflects something families visiting our North Sydney childcare and Mascot preschool notice straight away, we value stories all year, not just in August.
Long before children learn their letters, they are learning through stories. A pause to ask, “What happens next?” builds thinking. Hearing a favourite story again and again builds language, memory and confidence. None of it feels like a lesson. But all of it is learning.

This Book Week, our educators brought favourite stories to life through small group storytelling, retelling and story-inspired play. At our early learning centre in North Sydney, a favourite picture book became the starting point for a whole afternoon of exploration. At our preschool in Mascot, a familiar story turned into an afternoon of dress ups and imaginative play.

Because for children, a story doesn’t always end when the book closes. Sometimes, that’s where the real adventure begins.
