Early Science: Learning Through Curiosity

At our early learning centre in North Sydney, National Science Week lands in the middle of winter, right when a room of curious three and four year olds is asking “why” about everything. It’s the same over at our preschool in Mascot, a good excuse to lean into something we already do most days.

For young children, science starts with curiosity. Why did the ice melt? What happens when we mix colours? Will it sink or float? These simple questions invite children to wonder, make predictions and test their ideas.

Science happens naturally through play and everyday experiences. Water play introduces cause and effect, building with blocks brings problem-solving into focus, and mixing colours encourages children to observe change.

Across our North Sydney and Mascot early learning centres, educators give children the space to investigate their ideas, ask questions and try again when things don’t go as planned.

Because early science isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being curious enough to find them.
