Toybox Curriculum

Our Toybox curriculum is a whole service, holistic approach to the early years. Experience and expertise is the driving force behind our delivery. Research shows us that a child’s development in the early years is paramount to a successful future. Learning through play is fun and is what instils a child’s desire to learn.
Consistent with the National Quality Standard (NQS) and the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) we aim for a balance of child initiated interests, teacher-directed intentional teaching and a collaborative partnership with families and the community, to deliver the Toybox Curriculum.

Our teachers and educators are trained in the delivery of the NSW Government initiative program Munch and Move. The Munch and Move program allows us to provide fun, play-based experiences to embed healthy eating from a young age. A typical day at Toybox would include regular water breaks to ensure growing bodies receive their recommended daily intake of water, discussions with children about the food on our plate at meal times, discussions with parents about food stages for infants and toddlers, planting and growing fruits & vegetables to use in cooking experiences and all while incorporating pre-literacy and pre-numeracy development.

We encourage children to become confident and involved learners across all the outcomes of the National Curriculum for birth to 5 years – called the Early Years Learning Framework. We expose children to concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at their young age to help begin the development of early reasoning and critical thinking skills. Inquiry-based learning builds the foundation of knowledge and skill to give children a step ahead when they commence formal schooling. We plan based on children’s interests and family input and implement based on the process of the experience, rather than a targeted end result.

Our child-centred, play-based approached education provides children with open-ended natural environments which encourage exploration, discovery and risk-taking in a safe space. Our team provides a platform for ongoing environmental education that encourages children to develop an appreciation for nature. We believe practicing sustainability empowers children to construct knowledge, explore values and grow their connections to their world. Toybox Greenies is about embedding lifelong learning for an environmentally responsible adulthood. Learning about sustainability starts with everyday practice.

The early years are an optimum time for children to develop healthy physical activity habits. With a focus on fine and gross motor skills in the early years, we are providing foundations to grow a child’s independence and satisfaction with being able to do things for themselves. Extending our teaching to include personal hygiene, physical fitness, emotions and social relationships we are nurturing the child’s wellbeing and self-confidence. Our teachers and educators believe being physically active provides excellent opportunities to teach children about differences and similarities, how to work with others and to promote different cultural practices around play all while exploring language.

Toybox Partners

At Toybox, we are firm believers that it takes a village to raise a child; building long-lasting collaborative partnerships with the community allows us to widen this village. Ensuring successful partnerships with families enables us to learn the invaluable information required to allow us to truly engage in a child’s learning journey; everyone is an individual who is celebrated. Building connections throughout our community are enabling us to develop the children as global citizens and encouraging them to give back to the community through fundraising initiatives with the Sydney Children’s Hospital and the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation.

Early exposure to books and words on a page has an important effect on a child’s development therefore reading and discussion is a regular part of our day. Children, including infants, benefit from being read to; they gain valuable practice with language sounds, vocabulary and basic educational concepts. As part of our school transition program, the children are engaged in the ELLA program, an Australian Government Initiative to expose and engage children in a second language.

Every child is unique in the way they learn and develop skills and knowledge. Our program is incorporated into our daily routines from the moment your child starts with us. We develop the foundations that ensure your child is a successful learner throughout their schooling life from a very young age. In the last twelve (12) months prior to the child entering school, they will take part in our school transition program. We regularly engage with local schools to ensure our program ensures the children are well prepared for “big school”.
